American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant
The American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant to Thomas Jefferson University, Dr. Richard Pestell, PI and Dr. Marja Nevalainen, co-PI. This grant allows the annual award of pilot project grants to beginning investigators who have no national peer-reviewed research grant support. These small grants will support beginning investigators in initiating cancer research projects that can generate preliminary results enabling them to compete successfully for national research grants in all areas of cancer research.
Beginning cancer investigators (within 6 years of initial appointment) at Thomas Jefferson University, The Helen F. Graham Cancer Center/Christiana Care Health System, The Lankenau Institute for Medical Research, The Nemours Center for Childhood Cancer Research, and the University of Delaware who do not yet have R01 funding will be eligible to apply.
All applicants will need to identify a senior faculty member who will serve as their mentor. All grant proposals will be reviewed in the framework of whether the project will be able to produce preliminary data for a fundable R01-grant application. Applicants are encouraged to spell out in their application the tentative specific aims for the national peer-reviewed grant proposal for which this seed funding will be used. The maximum budget that you may request is $30,000; the actual amount awarded may be less. Applications will be accepted in all aspects of cancer research.
A part of the budget for the ACS-IRG awards is ear-marked for "cancer research of special interest to American Cancer Society". These research projects should be focused on identifying effective methods for predicting cancer risk, detecting early-stage cancer, or guiding cancer treatment; developing effective methods for increasing the informed use of proven procedures for cancer prevention, early detection, or treatment; or determining the impact of implementing such effective methods on cancer patient outcomes. Furthermore, the projects should involve at-risk populations experiencing cancer disparities. Please specify if the application is in the "ACS-IRG Special Interest" category.
The 2012 application deadline is extended to February 27 at 9:00 AM.
The completed and signed application must be submitted electronically; the research proposal section has an 8 page maximum (see instructions).
