Endocrine Mechanisms and Hormone Action in Cancer Program
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Hallgeir Rui, M.D., Ph.D., Program Leader
Leonard Gomella, M.D., Program Co-Leader
The overarching goal of the Endocrine Mechanisms and Hormone Action in Cancer Program is to discover molecular alterations and signatures of cancer of hormone regulated tissues, and to translate these findings into new strategies for effective detection, diagnosis, and cure. A main focus of this new Program is on hormone responsive and hormone refractory breast and prostate cancer, but studies of other endocrine-related malignancies are also included in the Program. Aligned with the NIH Roadmap, the program maintains a strong commitment to and emphasis on translational research, with ongoing interactions with clinical Departments of Pathology, Surgery, Radiation Oncology, and Medical Oncology. A Program grant application on Breast Cancer Differentiation has already been submitted from this Program.
Scientific Goals
- Exploiting mechanisms of hormone action for improved therapy and prevention of hormone responsive and hormone refractory cancer
- Developing innovative strategies and technologies for detection, diagnosis, and monitoring of hormone responsive and hormone refractory cancer
- Designing pre-clinical models for drug response prediction to facilitate improved tailored treatment of hormone responsive and hormone refractory cancer
